About Pierro/Pierette significance in art: "... Pierrot became an alter-ego of the artist, specifically of the famously alienated artist of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His physical insularity; his poignant lapses into mutism, the legacy of the great mime Deburau; his white face and costume, suggesting not only innocence but the pallor of the dead; his often frustrated pursuit of Columbine, coupled with his never-to-be-vanquished unworldly naïveté—all conspired to lift him out of the circumscribed world of the Commedia dell'Arte and into the larger realm of myth. Much of that mythic quality ("I'm Pierrot," said David Bowie: "I'm Everyman") still adheres to the "sad clown" of the postmodern era." -Wikipedia
I hope you enjoy my depictions of Pierro and Masquerade! My earliest encounter with the archetype was when I was 7 years old, at a painting class- at "For Art's Sake" in Rhode Island. Our teacher had a huge box of greeting cards for us to practice drawing from- I immediately honed in on the Pierrette- I identified with her immediatley, especially the far away look in her eyes, I too was always far away in my imagination, daydreaming. Some 27 years later, I stumbled upon the artwork not once but *three times of Mira Fujita during a thrift shopping experience- all within the same day. I had been thinking of an image by her I saw online that day, and looked down at a shelf in the shop- and the very same painting (a rare one) was literally right at my feet. I took it as a direct signal and it was no coincidence that Pierrette (the energy of the character) was calling for me to paint her again, that there was something important I needed to learn from Pierrot/Pierrette! I googled Mira Fujita and found myself enchanted and mezmorized by her watercolor technique, the simplicity and the stoic far away look in her paintings. The term Romantic Lyricism was used to describe her work, a term I'd never heard used before- a perfect description of what I'm trying to achieve with my own personal works, a flowing lyrical romantic/idealistic vision with musicality. -Christina Siravo
